What Causes Abdominal Distension After Having Food?

Upon eating, my stomach/waist expands by 3 1/2 inches, and my blood pressure drops precipitously so that I feel faint. Approximately one to hours after eating, my waist returns to normal. The local doctors tell me that nothing is wrong, and they are treating me for irritable bowel syndrome, and restricting my diet. Please help, as this unprecedented enlargement of my stomach has never occurred before. Thank you...

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It is possible that enlargement is related to bloating. Bloating can occur in response to specific foods, can be due to constipation or GERD.

Foods that cause bloating are cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, turnips, prunes, beans/peas, carbonated drinks.

If any of these are used, then restricting use of the above and other gas-producing foods, may be helpful for you.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
