What Causes Abdominal Distension And Constipation?

My husband, for the past couple of days has had a distended abdomen and said he occasionally feels short of breath. He did have some constipation a few days ago. He took Colace and it seemed to help. It s not painful but says he feels full. He used to smoke but now uses an e-cigarette. He says he doesn t feel bad or weak. He is a 65 year old. Thank you for your time.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi.
Thanks for the query for your husband who is 65 and is smoker.
He developed constipation, which in turn can be due to low fiber, less oral water, constipating foods and so on.
It looks to be the cause of the distension of the abdomen.
He can continue Colace.
Take a laxative and if all the fecoliths pass out the distension might go away.
Ask him the following:
More fibers in the food.
Avoid causative foods and beverages.
Plenty of oral fluids.
Laxatives whichever suits him
Ambulation, exercises does help a lot .
I hope this answers you query.
