What Causes Abdominal Pain And Bloating Of Stomach After Inserting Mirena?

I have the mirena coil fitted but I ve been having abdominal pains snd a bloated feeling during the last week. This hasn t happened since I had the coil fitted over a year ago and I haven t had a period for about six months. I m now worried that there is something wrong with the coil due to the abdominal pains

Mirena is a hormonal intrauterine device (IUD) that is used to prevent long term unwanted pregnancies from unprotected sexual activities. It contains progestin that is a female hormone. It is formed by plastic frame that is inserted into a female uterus. It works by thickening of mucus in the female cervix that prevent sperm from fertilizing an egg and partially suppressing ovulation. It may cause abdominal bloating, stomach pain, upset GIT, nausea, vomiting etc.

Again it may cause changes in menstrual cycles like prolonged, short, heavy, scanty bleeding during periods or cessation of menstrual cycle or amenorrhea. Irregular periods may improve after 6 months of use. If these side effects persist for long or bother you, then you should consult your gynecologist immediately for medical attention.
