What Causes Abdominal Pain And Diarrhea Despite Taking Nexium For GERD?
I have GERD and currently take 60 mg of nexium a day. I have been taking this medicine for a few years to treat my symptoms and it has worked very well. Recently I have had intestinal pain/cramping with loose stools and I am not sure exactly what the cause is.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Sirisha's Response
The symptoms you are describing may be one of the serious side effects of nexium use where in infection with clostridium defficile is seen.you should not use anti diarrheals or any narcotic pain medication as the symptoms will get worse with that. If the diarrhea is persistent, abdominal or stomach pain/cramping, fever, blood/mucus in your stool are present you better consult your physician and tell the dr who can decide alternative medication for your GERD as well as treatment for your diarrhea based on physical examination and appropriate investigations. You should take bland diet and plenty of fluids like buttermilk and fruit juices and also maintain body weight in normal range through exercise and diet to minimise GERD symptoms.
