What Causes Abdominal Pain And Nausea After Taking Metformin?

So I ve recently been diagnosed with diabetes. My doctor prescribed metformin 1000 each tablet. I ve only been taking it for about 3 weeks one pill two times a day. For about a week now my stomach has been hurting and I feel nauseous and on top of that I have diarrhea. My question is. Is this common ? Or do I have to stop taking it ?

Hi
Thank you for asking
Metformin is a medication that helps the body use insulin.Like all other medications, metformin causes some side effects such as stomach upset and diarrhea. So it's quite normal for you to experience such symptoms.
But, in this this case I advice you to take metformin with meals because food increases its absorption in the stomach and reduces stomach upset, diarrhea and nausea.
Second, in your case, that you have just started metformin, I recommend you to take it with the largest meal.

If your diarrhea persist and your symptoms get worse, please see your endocrinologist in order to evaluate your situation.
Please, DO NOT STOP taking metformin, without consulting to your doctor first.
Hope this is helpful to you
