What Causes Abdominal Pain And Tenderness Around Belly Button Of A Child?

My grandson age 10 is having abdominal pain & tenderness in the area around the belly button predominantly mid (not left or right). It was sporadic approximately once a week for the last month but has turned constant and daily for the last week. He has had x-ray and ultrasound. Everything appears to be normal including appendix. Originally pain came with nausea appeared after eating pretty much anything. We have tried 150 mg ranitidine once a day along with Tums. This is not helping. He says his pain level is 5 to 7 out of 10. He is a smart dedicated student without any anxieties or stresses and his life. He is happy and well-adjusted but just has the pain. Any ideas?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

As abdomen is said to be a magic box, the cause of pain needs to be examined physically and investigated as per need, before starting treatment. But looking at his complaints it can be acid peptic problem or, intestinal infection or infestation. Let him take bland and easily digestible food. Drink water sufficiently. Continue with Ranitidine. Give him tab Cyclopam 1/3rd (over the counter), if pain is too much. Please take him to a physician or a gastroenterologist if needed for expert advice.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
