Hi,
1. If you are getting nausea/
constipation with oral
iron supplements which could either be
ferrous sulphate, ferrous fumarate, thus try another compound of iron like ferrous ammonium citrate [dexorange], ferrous glycine sulphate [fezocar], or ferrous succinate [hematrene], or you can go for injectable preparation of Iron either through intramuscular or intravenoues drip [after test dose].
2. Apart from the medicine(s), some points worth mentioning are:
- All oral iron preparations stain the stool black.
- All iron preparations raise
Hemoglobin by 1% every day, and 1 gram % every week, continue treatment for 3 months to replenish stores.
- Gastric irritation is minimal if taken between meals [although absorption will be slightly delayed]
- Do not take milk/milk products one hour before or after taking iron supplements since milk hampers the absorption of iron.
-
Anemia is very common and Hemoglobin of more than half the patients, even in well to do families is below normal.
- Oral Iron capsules are preferred to liquid preparations which are costlier and stain the tongue black. If satisfactory response is not seen [as you have mentioned] thus please consult your GP or gynecologist to look for the source of blood loss:
hookworm, piles, PV bleeding, malignancies.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
