What Causes Abdominal Pain In A Child With Inflamed Colon?
Good evening. My 10 year old daughter has been having pains in her RLQ for 2 weeks now. He have had blood work, urine sample, ultrasound and a CT scan. All blood and urine test have been normal. The ultrasound showed a very small cyst on her right ovary and had to do the CT scan because the appendix was now visible. The CT scan showed the appendix was ok but the colon looked inflamed. What could be causing this? My doctors are talking to each other, but I would like some more help. Thank you

Emergency Medicine Specialist, Dr. Tim Evans's Response
Hi. The pain may be coming either some spillage of fluid from her ovarian cyst, or alternatively from her colon which may be inflamed. The suspected colonic inflammation will probably need following up by your daughter's specialist doctors. If she is otherwise well in herself at the moment, then it is likely they will arrange a further scan in due course - possibly an MRI scan which does not involve any radiation and is safe - in order to identify if there is any problem with her colon, especially if her pain persists. If her symptoms settle down, then the colonic inflammation may well be a result of a simple infection of her gut. If her symptoms have been longer-standing, or she has had problems with passage of blood or mucus, then an important diagnosis that will need to be investigated is inflammatory bowel disease - ulcerative colitis or Crohn's. It would be important to discuss these concerns with your daughter's doctor.
