What Causes Abdominal Pain In An Elderly Person While On Magnesium?

I have been taking magnesium on my chiropractors advice for 4 years and suffered constant stomach pain. Having had numerous tests , none of my doctors queried my medication. Without realising the magnesium could be causing my problem over the years, I took myself off it recently and found I am much better in the tummy department, however I now have lower back pain rather badly. I am 81 years of age and fairly fit in other ways, and just thought it was something I am stuck with. What do you think is going on. I understand magnesium could affect the stomach but is good for the back and muscle spasms ....?

Hi
Welcome to.HCM
See, magnesium acts by increasing gastric motility i.e. by increasing peristaltic movements of gastrointestinal tract. Hence , some times it increases peristaltic movement so much so that, it leads to stomach ache. Also its side effect is diarrhoea.
I hope this information was of help.
Thank you.
