What Causes Abdominal Pain On The Left Side?

My daughter is 30 years old, fairly healthy & a paramedic. She is experiencing a lot of pain in the left mid abdominal area for over a week. She went to an emergency clinic/hospital & they did an x-ray & took blood. At first they thought she had a ulcer. Now they think it could be a hernia but are not sure. They gave her med to take for ulcers & now want a stool sample. This morning I asked her if it could be a hernia? She lifts heavy patients in her line of work & I thought she could have strained herself too much. Any ideas?

Hi and welcome to Healthcaremagic. Thank you for your query. I am Dr. Rommstein, I understand your concerns and I will try to help you as much as I can

Well, I dont think this is hernia but it may be diverticulosis and treatment forit depends on how bad your symptoms are. If the pain is mild, you are able to drink liquids, and you have no signs ofcomplications, treatment may include: Medicines such as antibiotics and pain relievers.Changes in diet, starting with a clear-liquid or bland diet that is low in fiber until the pain goes away, then increasing the amount of fiber.

If the pain is severe, you are not able to drink liquids, or you have complications of diverticulitis, a hospital stay is needed. Treatment will include Antibiotics.Only In more severe cases, surgery may be required.
