Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Abdominal Soreness And Fever Despite Having Negative Result For Urine Infection?
I thought I had a bladder infection when I gave urine for a test step in the Dr.`s office. The nurse said it tested positive and gave me a prescription for Nitrofurantoin and sent the urine in for a culture. That night I had 102 fever and had to take tylenol for a few days because I kept feeling like I was getting a fever. I was nauseous and felt weak.Today they said the culture was negative and check with my gynecologist for a yeast infection. They said to quit taking Macrobid. I am still not feeling well and I am sweating but not getting fever. My left flank and kidney are sore. I think I may have a kidney infection. Can you have a negative urine sample and still have a kidney infection?
As per the history, you had a urinary tract infection which was treated by Nitrofurantoin (macrobid) but you are still symptomatic and have issues with your flank however your urine sample is negative. Yes, you can have an infection on with negative urine test as you were on antibiotic which makes the report negative.
Generally patients of UTI do not get soreness in kidney/flank area. I would advise you to get a review done by your treating doctor and get a condition called pyelonephritis ruled out. It is possible that the infection from the lower urinary tract has ascended up to the kidney.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Anoop Kumar, General & Family Physician
