What Causes Abnormal Vaginal Bleeding Between Periods?

I am an 18 year old female and in one day it will be three weeks of having my period. Sometimes it gets thin and I think it might be over, but then it gets heavier. I ve also been having blood clots (I know that it s the uterus lining, but everybody I know says blood clots) the length and width of my finger and in copious amounts. My appetite is all but gone and I ve lost 5 lbs and I ve been sleeping less. I made an appointment with a gyno but the earliest they could give me is two weeks. Can someone please help me?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The commonest cause of abnormal vaginal bleeding between periods is hormonal imbalances, birth control pills, fibroid, polyps, cysts, PCOS, etc. Since you are having abnormal menstruation since three weeks, you are suggested to take a balanced diet with high iron, calcium and protein. Stay well hydrated, avoid anxiety and stress. You can take Regesterone (Norethisterone) (5m) for 5 -7 days to help treat heavy, irregular periods.

Tranexamic acid (Cyklokapron, Lysteda) is also equally effective to treat menorrhagia and bleeding disorders. You are recommended to get clinically examined by a gynecologist, get CBC, Urinalysis, USG (uterus), blood test done and get treated at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
