What Causes Abnormal Weight Gain When Diagnosed With Grave S Disease?
My 25 year old niece was diagnosed as having Grave s disease about a year ago. She has gained 60 pounds in two months . My sister has taken her for a consultation for bariatric surgery. this seems extreme to me but my niece is having trouble finding a job and her weight is likely contributing to that problem, I think my she should have a second opinion with another endocrinologist as a start Thoughts?
I agree that she should consider an endocrinologist. Graves is normally associated with weight loss not gain because of the high level of thyroid hormone.
Treatment of Graves with medication to suppress the thyroid may then cause low levels of thyroid hormone and cause weight gain. If this is the case and her levels are low, she may now need a little hormone replacement.
I hope this helps
