Hi,
Accumulation of fluid in the elbow is often due to trauma or
injury to the joint. In your case, being run over by a horse and landing on your elbow may have caused a
contusion or
bruise on the joint. This can result in bleeding into the joint, which can accumulate as fluid. The fluid may also contain inflammatory cells and
proteins that are part of the body's natural response to injury.
Other possible causes of fluid accumulation in the elbow include
bursitis, which is inflammation of the bursa (a fluid-filled sac that acts as a cushion between bones and soft tissues) that is located near the elbow joint. Infection or
arthritis can also cause fluid buildup.
If the fluid accumulation is causing discomfort or affecting the function of your arm, you should see a doctor. Treatment options may include draining the fluid with a needle (aspiration), applying a compressive wrap or
splint to the area, and taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to reduce pain and inflammation. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to remove the fluid and repair any damage to the joint.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
