What Causes Ageusia And Vertigo?

My 58 yr old husband has recently had a loss of taste. Maybe 3-4 months ago. In the last month, still going on he has vertigo, from working on a lift over a river on a building. The test of blowing cool/warm air in his ears last week Friday, didn t help. Three days ago he started a sore throat, now has laryngitis. Small loss of weight because nothing tastes normal. He says sweets taste bitter. I have questioned his personality lately. Has done some things not normal for him. He is self employed and very busy working construction/masonry. He has had vertigo about 15 yrs. ago after being on a cruise ship, but the test of air blowing worked for him at that time.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The causes of ageusia are so many as dry mouth (most common), salivary gland infections, gum problems, certain medications as ACE inhibitors, certain antibiotics, anti-depressants, antihistamine agents, allergy, infection, aging, trauma, poor oral hygiene, excess use of tobacco, and others.

Causes of vertigo are benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) mainly age related without reason, Meniere disease, labyrinthitis, migraine tumors, CV stroke, head or neck injury, and others.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Purva Patel
