What Causes Aggressive Behaviour After Blood Transfusion?

My mother had 4 units of blood administered in less than 16 hrs. After the last transfusion she became very agitated and now is full blown out of her normal mind . Her actions and words are so out of character and she is inconsolable is this from the transfusions?

Hello,

Conditions like electrolyte imbalances must be ruled out. Massive blood transfusion can cause alteration in the level of electrolytes and can cause similar symptoms.

If symptoms persist, it is better to consult a physician and get evaluated. A serum electrolyte study has to be done.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
