What Causes Alcohol Smell In Food Cooked With Olive Oil?

Hi; During dinner tonight, my 16 year old son complained about rubbing alcohol smell in the two dishes I served him (Beef Wellington and Pinto Beans cooked in olive oil). I could not smell anything. These dishes were made at different times (one tonight, and one two days ago) and really share nothing common except salt. One was cooked in the oven, one on a burner. Wondering whether this is something I should worry about. One note: he was in an accident two days ago (Monday) but did not have any injuries except for a little soreness in the neck yesterday. He is otherwise healthy, and has been healthy throughout his childhood, except for mild childhood asthma, which has not been around for the last 3 years. Thanks for your input.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The alcohol smell in food indicates possible interaction with the ingredients of oil during cooking or preservation of the food. The inability on your part to not sense the smell may be altered smell sensations after recent accident incident.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
