What Causes Allergic Rhinitis And Throat Discomfort?

Lately - the past 6 weeks or so - my allergy symptoms have increased and a new one has appeared. In addition to runny eyes, nose, etc., I have to clear my throat constantly and in the middle of the night I wake coughing, to the point of almost gagging. Also, my saliva is extremely thick and hard to swallow. The combination of the cough, the thick saliva and running nose is killing me (not really) but my dad had throat cancer so I am concerned.

Hi,

Symptoms of allergy can be worse especially if you are in contact with the agent that causes your allergy so maybe it would be helpful to pay attention if being in certain places or using certain chemicals makes the symptoms worse and try to avoid them.

Also you can take oral antihistamines at night like Loratadine to help with allergy symptoms and some patients really benefit from steroid nasal spray. I would also recommend you to try Omeprazole twice a day to see if this will help with the cough at night as sometimes it can be triggered from acid reflux as well. You can try it for 2 weeks and if no help then it is not due to acid reflux so you will need to go on just with the antihistamine and nasal steroids.

As with any cough, if it lasts more then a month or it is any worse you will need to see a doctor to make sure it is just allergy or something else.

Hope I have answered your query.
