What Causes An Altered Sense Of Smell After A Surgery?
Hello. I had surgery 3 weeks ago and since that time, my taste buds are not normal. Food does not taste normal. Sweets taste way too sweet, and everything else tastes different. Does this have anything to do with the anesthesia? I am 67 years old and had a twilight procedure and a day later full surgery with general anesthesia.
Altered sense of taste can be most probably due to side effect of medication that you must be taking post surgery as the effect of anaesthesia does not last for so long and must have subsided by now..
So my suggestion is to consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated and a thorough clinical examination should be done.
For now you should gargle with hydrogen peroxide solution in water. Use a tongue scraper to clean your tongue.. Do warm saline gargles.. Take multivitamin supplements..
Hope this helps..
Regards.
