What Causes An Altered Sense Of Smell?

Hello there. My names Valeska......i had an accident 3months ago i was carried, then accidentally dropped and hit the back of my head very hard. Was in icu for a couple of days...... had bleeding on my brain....was told its a basal scull fracture. I remember almost nothing from the evening of the accident and 2 weeks after. So it wasnt great. I lost random memories. My memory is touch and go...my concentration isnt great either, im quite emotional, and still dont have ANY sense of smell since the accident. I saw a neurologist last week...... he told me i still have a bit of blood on my left eardrum( bled from my ear on the accident and my ear and big area behind my ear was pitch black for about 2 weeks) my left pupil is smaller than my right......and i still get a bit of vertigo when i move cerfain ways. I am totally not feeling myself...... its horrible. He wanted an mri after the consultation....but i cant afford one now. And also....wat started a coiple of days ago.....( i have 0% smell) but i been getting this weird foul smell/odour from my sinus........... its not nice..... and makes me feel sick when i smell it. Wich is weird coz i cant physically smell anything else. Its not painfull....... maybe slightly mucussy and a bit of preassure. Am i ok? How long does recovery take for this?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

If symptoms persist, better to consult a neurologist and plan for an MRI brain to rule out possible intracranial (inside the brain) causes.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
