Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
i have a significant heightened sense of smell and my taste is extremely off. I had mitral valve repair surgery on 11/20/17. This is making me very nauseous Is this condition going to go away and is there anything I can do to improve the situation.
Increased acuity of smell is not directly related to your prior heart surgery. Are you having any continuous medications? Hyperosmia(increased acuity of smell) can be caused due to several environmental factors. The condition is temporary and usally subsides over time naturally. However if it is severe and persistent you may need to consult a psychiatrist for management of the same. And regarding nausea you may need to avoid strong odours for the time being. Additionally you can take an antacid (Famotidine 40mg once daily on empty stomach every morning ) and Ondem Mouth Dispersible tablets on an SOS basis to combat nausea.
