My 11 year old grandson has stopped eating. His build is small and he has no weight to lose. He eats 1/2 a sandwich as an example. He says everything tastes different and he just doesn t like his food any more. He s at Texas Children s in Houston Medical Center undergoing testing. I m trying to find conditions this is a symptom of but need a starting place.
Disorders of taste in children can be caused by facial palsy familial dysautonomia (excessive sweating, smooth tongue, nasal speech, vomiting, unsteady walk), liver, kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, zinc deficiency. Also, various drugs.

What Causes An Altered Sense Of Taste In A Child?
Hi, Altered taste sensation is generally caused due to zinc deficiency. Kindly give him zinc supplementation and foods rich in zinc. Also, add an appetizer syrup along with it. Gradually, his taste sensation should improve along with appetite. Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Regards, Dr. Ashakiran S, General & Family Physician
