What Causes An Elevated Heart Rate While On Diltiazem?

I have been taking diltiazem 120 mg for a while due to a flutter and now a fib. Today I was scheduled for a catheter cat scan. I am allergic to metoprolol so I took an extra dose last night and one his morning. My heart rate was 90 so they gave me ten mg of diltiazem, they repeated this four times each time my heart rate went up. Why didn t it lower my Rate?
