Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, I saw my doctor this week and she told me that my liver is bigger then it should be. I also feel cramping in the lower portion of my abdomen (kinda like menstrual cramping) and I have a little lump just bellow my rib cages in the middle. I am going for an ultrasound but I am very nervous. So thought I would ask the question cause she told me she is worried.
Usually liver enlargement may indicate some types of hepatitis or fatty liver diseases and in most cases it doesn't require any specific treatment. If this is caused by diet, obesity and diabetes then dietary and lifestyle changes will be beneficial in every case.
Alcohol and viral hepatitis are most common causes and in this case medical evaluation is required. Also if there is infectious disease or biliary duct disorders then you need to do some tests to rule out more serious issues which require specific medical treatment. You need to check your viral markers and do liver biopsy if necessary.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein
