Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I HAVE A THYROID NODULE THAT HAS INCREASED FROM 4mm to 7mm IN TWO YEARS. I WAS GIVEN A PET SCAN FOR A LUNG NODULE AFTER THE 4MM THYROID NODULE WAS FOUND AND THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF CANCER. I AM WONDERING IF I SHOULD HAVE THE RADIOACTIVE IODINE TREATMENT OR MEDICATION. I AM A 64 YEAR OLD FEMALE WITH CROHN S DISEASE AND MY MOTHER HAD THYROID CANCER AND MY SISTER WAS TREATED WITH THE RADIOACTIVE IODINE TREATMENT FOR HER THYROID CONDITION.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
It depends whether it is a hot (hyperplastic) nodule or a cold (cancerous) nodule. In the former case, and if you have hyperthyroid symptoms, radioactive iodine treatment could be relevant.
Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
