What Causes An Episode Of Black Out?

Hi I was delivering leaflets today and all of a sudden I felt myself slipping away as if I were falling asleep - for a few minutes I couldn t recognise where I was but I kept walking and tried to fight it until I eventually came out of it. I didn t faint but at one point I couldn t figure out whether it ws night or day (and this was 1:00pm!). I might have been too hot and not drunk enough fluids but it has never happened to me before and I am curious and a little bit spooked by it.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

First of all it's sad to know what you had been going through lately.

Based on the history you have shared, such an episode can be caused by either cardiac syncope or neurological issues. Endocrine disorders also need to be evaluated. Serum electrolytes and thyroid levels, as well as sugar levels, need monitoring.

EKG and carotid Doppler may be needed but not at this moment. A baseline review by your primary care physician is recommended.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Saddiq Ulabidin,
