Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes An Increase In The Red Blood Cell Count?
I had a blood test Monday and results were that I was producing to many red blood cells. Doctor is testing and thinks I may have PV. I look at symptoms for PV and I was not having those symptoms. Could phentermine have cause my body to produce more red cells.
High red blood cell count may be caused by low oxygen levels, kidney disease or other problems.
Although there is a list of medical conditions which can cause high red cell count such as heart failure, COPD, nicotine dependence etc.
There is one common condition which may lead to high blood cell count and that is dehydration.
This is due to the red blood cells becoming more concentrated. The actual number of red blood cells stays the same.
So I will suggest start drinking 10 - 12 glasses of water daily for a week to 10 days and then get your red blood cell counts checked again before consulting a doctor.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Prabhash Verma, General & Family Physician
