What Causes An Increased Bilirubin Count And Stomach Pain?

HI my son in September of 2010 was DX with Momo and Viral Hepatitis the V.H was due to the mono - we have been having blood drawn every three months for an increased bilirubin count at dx it was 5 and went down as low as 1.5 and now it is back up to over 2 he is 16 years old and in great health never sick weight is 230 and 6 1 --- now his stomach hurts and stays blotted and energry level is just not the same. He told me before he had he blood drawn last week that he felt his bilirubin was goint to be up and I aksed him why and he said I can tell by the way I feel his doctor is calling in a gastro doc to inquire as to why his bilirubin is going bk up could this be a relapse or just something that will go away with time due to the mono. I would think he would confer with a encrodilogist

Hi,

It would be important to know which fraction of the bilirubin is elevated, the direkt or indirect one. Only this test can provide orientation about the source of the elevation. Because bilirubin can be elevated with the source being in the liver OR in the blood (platelets). You should insist that this test is done!

Having said that, as physicians we never treat lab results but patients / their symptoms. A slightly elevated bilirubin is a common finding, even in healthy people. What troubles me are rather his symptoms. So make them the focus of the doctors attention.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
