Hello,

The skin infection caused by strep that your father admitted to the hospital is called erysipelas. It is an infection of the upper dermis and superficial lymphatics caused by beta-hemolytic group A Streptococcus bacteria on scratches or otherwise infected areas. Penicillins are the only one antibiotic to use by injection (intravenous or intramuscular) depending on the severity of the symptoms.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
