What Causes An Ostium Secundum Atrial Septal Defect In The Heart?

Hello. I am 20 and I am in my 3rd year MBBS. I ve been diagnosed recently with a 16mm ostium secundum ASD in my heart. The cardiologist said on echocardiogram that there is a very thin membranous layer present but isn t functioning to stop the left to right shunt. Are there chances that this membrane can function again? I have been advised for umbrella device closure so can this membrane hinder the device passage? Or is it a possibility that this hole may have been created recently because a membranous septum is present? I have been into rigorous exercises, dance, walking all my life then how come I never faced problems then and recent episodes of palpitations occured after 20 years!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

As you describe, it occurs after exercise if you are not eating something, then it can be due to hypoglycemia which is low blood sugar.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Loveleen Sharma, General & Family Physician
