What Causes Anal Itching In A Child?

My 10 yr old has been having anal itching for the past 4 days. Benadry by mouth seems to help for a little while. No real redness or swelling. Tried looking at his poop with a magnifying glass, saw nothing. Everyone says pinworms, but I really am not sure. What else can cause this.

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Pinworms are a possible cause, as you mentioned or a rash/irritation in the area.

If there is a rash present then using a mild steroid cream such as hydrocortisone which is over the counter would help. This can be applied twice daily for 3 to 5 days.

If there is no rash, though you do not see anything in the stool , it would be best to treat for the worms.
Albendazole is commonly used and may sometimes be given over the counter as well. It is usually one dose

I hope this helps
