What Causes Anemia Along With Lowered RBC Level?

My 32 year old son s lab work for the last 9 months has shown to be borderline anemic. This months lab was even lower with the RBC 4.0, HGB 12., HCT 36, Neutrophils 41 and Lymphocytes 47. His doctor has ordered additional lab work stating that she needed to work this up further. He is 5 11 and weighs 180#. He is very active with working 12-14 hrs a day at a shipyard and hikes and camps on the weekends. He has had HTN since he was 18 years old. He eats healthy, rarely eats red meat. I am an RN and don t understand what this could be. Family Hx: heart disease, RA, Lung Cancer.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

A range of health problems can arise from nutritional deficiencies. Nutritional deficiency anemia can lead to a low red blood cell count, low hemoglobin in the red blood cells, or red blood cells that do not function as they should.
Nutritional deficiency anemia mainly results from a lack of iron, but a lack of folate or vitamin B12 can also cause anemia, and a low vitamin C intake can contribute.

Hope I have answered your query.
