What Causes Ankle Swelling Post A Broken Fibula Treatment
Hi, 4 months after a Non Union of my fibula(weber b fracture) I had 2 screws inserted. 6 weeks after this the X-ray show very little healing and it looks like the washers have either sunk into the bone and/or the screws are moving out. The screw heads seem to be standing out beyond the fibula. I have been told to try to walk without the walking cast and crutches and go back in 4 weeks. The bone hurts to touch, ankle is swollen and aches. I am nervous to walk but am doing so. Can you advise?
Based on the history you have shared, it should be reviewed by the orthopedic surgeon who has operated in the first place to rule out any bone infection or operation site infection as increased swelling, tenderness to touch and ankle pains needs to be evaluated.
Though some inflammation is normal after surgery infection possibility should be ruled out first.
Meanwhile, OTC analgesics like acetaminophen or Ibuprofen along with muscle relaxants like tizanidine can be helpful. If pain is severe more potent analgesic like tramadol or gabapentin may be needed.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Saddiq Ulabidin, General & Family Physician
