What Causes Ants To Be Attracted To Urine During Pregnancy?

Hi, I am a healthy 28yo and I am 19 weeks pregnant with my second baby. This morning I noticed a large number of ants attracted to my unrine in the toilet (unflushed from my nightly visit). Can this indicate an excess amount of sugar in my urine, thereby also indicating an onset of gestational diabetes? My current weight is approx 61-62kg.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

During pregnancy, by default, the sugar level in the urine is more. This is because the absorption of sugar from the urine has been reduced during pregnancy.
Moreover, pregnancy is known as a diabetogenic condition; meaning thereby that if a woman is having subdued diabetes which is not overt, it gets overt during pregnancy. After pregnancy, again it may become latent. We have known cases in whom, the pregnancy showed diabetes which disappeared after delivery and then the woman developed diabetes again after 50 years.
In short, the sugar level in the urine is increased during pregnancy which attracts the ants.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nishikant Shrotri
