What Causes Anxiety Attacks Despite Taking Xanax?

I am on Xanax ER, 3 mg a day. It seems to be doing nothing at all. Before that, always under doctor care, I was taking Xanax IR, 2 mg a day. For five years. THis is not something I want but I have a high profile job that demands include public speaking and time on TV, in addition to flying, a phobia of mine. It s a lot of Xanax but I m puzzled why the Xanax ER is doing nothing. I have only been on it a week and the only affect it has is to make me extremely tired. While being treated for my anxiety, I am still on Xanax. What do you recommend? Stay on the IR, give the ER a chance? I m just baffled and, frankly, would like to be off all of it and somehow muddle through. Such a mixed bad. It s the only reason I can function at my job, literally, yet it is at a very high price (tolerance, addiction, horrific withdrawals). Thanks for input.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The anti-anxiety drugs need to be titrated, depending on the symptoms and response. The anxiety disorder is always associated with some degree of depression and needs to be treated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr AJEET SINGH, General & Family Physician
