Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Anxiety Despite Taking Prozac For Migraine And Panic Attack?
I am 66 years of age and for the first time in my life I am more anxious and have a tendency to get migraines ad panic attacks. I have been on Prozac for a long time with no benefit than I can see. I think my main problem is panic attacks and my doc has been treating me for depression. I need a medication that helps me not to withdraw from my life when I fear I could have an attack. Suggestions??
Prozac contains fluoxetine that belongs to the group of antidepressant medications known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs is used in the treatment of depression, obsessive compulsive disorders, anxiety, eating disorder like bulimia, premenstrual dysphoric disorder or PMDD etc. Antidepressants like Prozac itself may cause anxiety or it may aggravate anxiety or panic attacks, especially when people start consuming it for depression, though it's often used in the treatment of anxiety or panic attacks.
Again, about 25% of patients on SSRI or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor medications will have migraine headache, according to some clinical studies. So, if someone experiences migraines and anxiety or panic attacks during taking this medication or he thinks that his migraines and panic attacks may be resulted from Prozac, then he should consult his doctor immediately.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
