What Causes Appearance Of Small Grayish Spot On The Upper Gum?
I have a small, grayish blue spot (2 centimeters in diameter) on my upper gum where it meets one of my front teeth. The spot is not sore to the touch or sensitive in any way. I just noticed it today. I saw the dentist 6 weeks ago for a cleaning and he also saw one on my upper jaw, but the spot was located in the back near one of the molars. The dentist was not concerned but, now that I have another such spot, it seems a bit strange that another one has appeared. I am wondering what the best next step should be. Thank you.
I have gone through your query .The grayish spot you mention is pointing towards condition called leukoplakia ,which occurs due to continues irritation of mucosa. Irritation can be because of any reason like sharp edges of tooth ,filling and smoking. Your dentist can also prescribe topical anti inflammatory ointments and vitamin supplements.
Treatment of leukoplakia involves removal of irritants .The patches will go away in few weeks .If these patches persists for more then 2 weeks ,i would suggest you to consult oral pathologist ,who can perform biopsy to rule out more serious cancerous condition like malignant melanoma.
Hope your concern has been resolved,
Best Wishes, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
