What Causes Appetite Loss After A Femur Surgery?

My sister broke her femur on 6-1-16. The following day they did surgery inserting a rod and attached with a screw at each end. Surgery went fine however she has had no appetite ever since, says hot food especially is not good but eats only a couple bites of anything she tries, lost 35 lbs in 2 months and wasn t a large woman to start with. Doctors are at a loss. ??????

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Loss of appetite is a common complaint of most of the patients after major surgery. It occurs because of anesthesia and side effects prevail for quite some time.

As patients recover post-surgery their appetite returns to normal & they eat quite well.

Loss of appetite can be due to anxiety, pain/discomfort, toilet & mobility problems. However, she should take nutritious food for better & faster recovery.

Give her small amount of food frequently like yogurt, scrambled eggs, soft bread, cornflakes, nuts, fruits, beans, protein & vitamin supplements so that tendon & ligament repair are faster.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
