Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My mother is taking TraMADOL for sciatica (spelling) pain. She is 92 years old. So far, she has only experienced loss of appetite and tiredness. But she has had to black -- completely black -- bowel movements. Can this drug cause that? I realize she should call her doctor on Monday to see what s what, but just wanted to know if this is a side effect or not. I cannot find any reference to this in regard to this drug. Thank you.

What Causes Appetite Loss While On Tramadol?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice. No, Tramadol drug is not causing such side effect. Black stool is due to bleeding in the Upper gastrointestinal tract that is called Malena. Appetite loss is may be due to her age. Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Regards, Dr. Bhadresh Lakhani
