What Causes Asthma While Suffering From Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis?
Hi, I am a 46 year old female. I had a HR CT lungs 2 days ago and it is showing several large areas of dense old fibrosis in both lower lungs, very likely representing old idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. I am a registered nurse and understand this is serious, but my question is about the OLD part of the conclusion. I am asthmatic and was very unwell about 18 months ago and feel that I never quite recovered from the exacerbation. Is it likely I already had the IPF then? I m seeing my doctor and getting a specialist referral next week, but am wondering about the significance of old . Thank you
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Yes, it is quite possible that you might have IPF (idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis) 18 months ago. You might have have asthma at all because symptoms like cough, breathlessness etc are common in both of them. So better to consult pulmonologist and get done clinical examination and lung biopsy to confirm whether it is IPF or not. Old fibrotic areas are like dead tissue. This will stay as it is. Perfinodone should be started to halt the fibrosis. Discuss all these with pulmonologist and start treatment accordingly.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.
