What Causes Atrial Fibrillation And High Heart Rate After Leg Surgery?

My father is 81. He broke his leg and had surgery on Tuesday. He was fine until last night. He in is Afib and heart rate was 140 bpm and higher. Now his heart rate is fluctuating anywhere from 87bpm to 104 bpm. and still signs of afib. Is it possible he has had a heart attack during surgery?

Hello,

Cardiac arrhythmia is relatively common after surgery in elderly people. Generally it will settle once the acute period subsides. Antiarrhythmic drugs may be required in the meantime.
