What Causes Atrial Flutters Along With Palpitations In Heart?

Hi. I have atrial flutter. Some episodes of beats around 145. Unfortunately this happens when I go to cardiologist. I was doing well on diliatizem 300 but after two visits with high rate (145 or so) the Doctor added 5mg bisoprolol. I have it but haven t started yet. Have been around 70 bpm all weekend. Minor flutter and palpitations. Worried about bisoprolol side effects. If my heart is slow is it dangerous to take. Should I be taking cardizem 300 with it or is dose too high. Can I take it at night? I don t want to start and pass out at work. Thanks.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You are experiencing atrial flutters and palpitations in the heart. Certain medical conditions and some lifestyle choices may trigger or cause the symptoms. The factors that can cause the symptoms you are experiencing are high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, chronic stress and anxiety, aging, smoking, alcohol, diabetes, thyroid disease, history of heart attack in the past, lack of sleep, etc.

Stay away from addictions if any. Get clinically examined and evaluated for any chronic illness that has not been treated. You may have to get few repeat blood and imaging tests done to assess the present cardiac condition. If you are not sure or skeptic about the medicines prescribed by your treating doctor you are advised to get connected to him and consult him.

Medicines can slow or regulate your heart beat so they need to be monitored. Stay connected with your local treating doctor. To prevent atrial flutter maintain a healthy lifestyle with a well-balanced diet and regular exercise. Keep away from alcohol and quit smoking.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
