Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello Doctor, My daughter, 1 month old (born on 13-Apr-2015) is identified of having Artrial Septal Defect - Ostium Secundum - Moderate Size 7mm. Does it require surgery or catherer method? Or will it be closed automatically? Please advise. Thanks, Kannan
Atrial septal defect is a congenital heart disease where the wall between two upper chambers do not have complete partition and have a hole in the partition (Septum). Smaller size of holes generally close with age. If no symptoms are present, then generally a wait and watch policy is observed under the treatment of a cardiologist who examines the signs of closure of the hole by progressively examining on each subsequent visit till the child reaches the school going age.
Generally holes of size of >7 mm. need transcatheter repair or surgical repair. The hole situated in the middle of septum (Ostium secundum) may be repaired generally by less invasive transcatheter method, as present in your case.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Satnarain Bansal, General & Family Physician
