What Causes Atrophy And Is It Related To Alzheimers?

My wife was having cognitive problems so our PCM referred her to a Neurologist. Her MRI showed atrophy in the top front of her brain. His initial dignosis was early onset alzheimers. She is 46 years old. We than had a PET scan accomplished and it did not show the patterns consistent with Alzheimers. The Doctor is not sure what is going on, but is ordering more tests. She is showing difficulty remembering things that should be normal and has had a couple of driving problems. Such as not noticing RED lights. Some of her other symptoms include numb and pain in her feet and severe headaches. I have copies of the MRI and PET scans.
