Azoospermia means absence of motile, and hence viable) sperm in the semen.
The
sperm count in this condition is equal or less than 15 million/ml.
Hence, it is associated with very low levels of fertility or even
sterility in men.
Infections,
hormonal imbalance associated with sperm production, obstruction to the ducts and other medical illness could be associated with azoospermia.
If the defect is primarily in the testis, then azoospermia is usually permanent. Only Pre- and post-testicular causes of azoospermia are frequently correctible.
Hence, the condition needs to be evaluated by clinical examination and investigates to determine the cause, so that it can be appropriately managed.
