What Causes Back Pain Above The Waist?

PAIN IN THE BACK, BELOW SHOULDER...ABOVE WAIST. THOUGHT TO HAVE BEEN A MUSCLE STRAINED; ONCE RELIVED WITH MUSCLE RELAXANTS BUT THEY NO LONGER WORK. SPASAM HAS TURNED INTO SHARP PAIN. HEATING PAD RELEIVES FOR A SHORT TIME. COULD IT BE SOMETHING WITH THE KIDNEYS? (IT S ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF BACK) MANY THANKS!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Yes it can be from Kidney also.
I would like to suggest you some tests:

1. Kidney Function Test

2. MRI of the back

3. EMG of the back muscle.

4. KUB (Kidney Ureter Bladder)

I would like to ask you:

1. have you lost weight these days?

2. is changing the posture causing pain?

3. is there any burning sensation or pain during urination?

The test results are crucial in diagnosis along with the answers of the questions.

Meanwhile, heating pad and muscle relaxants are useful. If too much pain, you can take 50mg Tramadol.

Remember, if you want to take tramadol, the time between two doses must be 6 hours gap.

With the test results and answers, please post another question.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Dipan Samanta, General & Family Physician
