What Causes Back Pain While Passing Stool In Children?

My 3 year old daughter says her back hurts every time she has to poop. This morning she screamed and cried until she was finished, but it s not always that bad. Once she was done, the pain subsided. She is always full of energy & feels fine until time to go to the bathroom. She poops regularly and is not constipated. What could be the cause?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

There may be several reasons for pain during defecation: hard stools, gastroenteritis, anal fissures, etc. Since your daughter is only 3 years old, hard stool may be one of the reasons. For its prevention, increase fibres and green leafy vegetables in her diet. Also, encourage her to take plenty of water daily. Try these measures for 1 week. If the problem still continues, daily sitz bath (sitting in a tub of warm water) before defecation might be helpful.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
