What Causes Bad Breath After A Head Injury?

After a fall from a ladder in the garage, my sister-in-law was hospitalized with a head injury. Since then she suffers from very bad breath, if her mouth is dry it is not so bad, (which is only in the morning as she has sleep apnea and wears madk so her mouth is open and drys out) but as soon as saliva hits, the bad breath is there, it is driving her crazy. the only thing she can take into her mouth that helps for a minute is milk. anything else aggravates the condition. Any suggestion would be most welcome. Carol

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Bad breath or halitosis is unrelated to head injury unless the odor is from dried blood in the mouth. She should visit her dentist since a more likely culprit to her condition would be gingivitis, dental abscess/caries, or periodontal disease.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dariush Saghafi
