What Causes Bad Breath When Diagnosed With Diverticulitis?
My husband has been diagnosed with diverticulitis although he doesn t have any symptoms. Could this be the cause of his bad breath. One minute it smells of manure and then it smells of moth balls. It s persistent and really pungent. His oral hygiene is good and he drinks plenty of water. He often wakes with dry mouth hence plenty of water.
I can understand your concern. Bad breath is very common is patients suffering from diverticulitis. In diverticulitis, pouch develops in the digestive tract which retains food particles, bacteria etc. Over time, these food particles and bacteria cause foul smell that is presented as bad breath from the patient.
In that case, for permanent relief from bad breath, a patient has to get the diverticulitis treated with medicines or surgery and have to wait till the diverticulitis is subsided. For temporary relief from the bad breath, mouthwash can be used and sugarless flavored gums can be chewed. Keep drinking lots of water.
I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. I wish your husband feels better soon.
Best, Dr. Viraj Shah
