What Causes Bad Taste And Discoloration Of Tongue?
I had upper and lower jaw surgery 18 months ago and my braces came off in December. I now have a slight discoloration of my tongue and a bad taste (kind of salty) that I can t get rid of. My oral hygiene is good with flossing and brushing 3 times a day. Could the taste be related to the jaw surgery that included the sinuses or something else? I have permanent retainers for both the upper and lower teeth. The bad taste started after the surgery and was occasional but now I battle this everyday.
If the bad taste started after the surgery, then there is a possibility that it is due to sinuses. But there is another possibility that if you have a discolored tongue then it is probably related to it. It can be fungal infection of tongue or can also be Black hairy tongue. So to rule out the cause you need to get clinically checked.
For now you should clean your tongue daily using a tongue cleaner / tongue scraper. Also gargle daily with warm salt water. Eat more of hard foods like carrots, apples, other form of salads etc., as it helps keeping tongue, mouth and teeth clean. Drink plenty of water. If you do not find improvement then once get checked by a physician.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
